1 instrument by Giovanni & Francesco Grancino
We know very little about Francesco Grancino beyond that which can be gleaned from his labels. He appears to have worked together with his better-known brother, Giovanni, from around 1680 to the turn of the century, by which time Giovanni was well established independently.
The brothers’ work is quite different from Giovanni’s, as is shown by the rather Germanic swing of the f-holes and the rougher scroll of the 1692 viola featured here. The plainness of the wood of the back and the rich red-brown varnish, however, demonstrate the link to Giovanni’s early work.
