Spirito Sorsana

Spirito Sorsana was for many years assumed to be a pupil of Giofreddo Cappa. It is difficult to deny that there is a resemblance between the circa 1725 violin and the circa 1695 Cappa, but the different construction methods of these two craftsmen make it unlikely that they worked together.

Sorsana worked in Cuneo, about 45 miles south of Turin, and the two violins illustrated here suggest that his main influence was Stradivari. Both violins are cleanly made, with finely chosen materials. The almost uncanny similarity between them suggests a consistency in Sorsana’s work that may be misleading, as David Rattray illustrates a much less refined example from the year 1731 in his book Masterpieces of Italian Violin Making.
