Lot 185

A violin by Giovanni Battista Bodio

Venice, circa 1825-30

labelled Gio: Battista Bodio fecit Venetiis anno 182*
length of back 141/16in., 35.8cm.

Born into a family of musicians in 1774, Bodio was primarily a violinist. He probably trained as a violin maker with his uncle, Giuseppe Bodio, who had worked in the Serafin workshop, and Giovanni Battista is thought to have worked with Giorgio Serafin at the Mendicanti hospital.

His work is extremely rare and he seems to have ceased making around 1835, although it is possible that after that date he was in fact pre-dating his instruments for tax reasons.
