A letter from Fritz Kreisler to Mr. Evans

Berlin, March 1935

the letter concerns the scandal surrounding the discovery that Vitali's Praeludium & Allegro was actually written by Kreisler.

On the 8th February 1935, the front page of the New York Times gave the headline: Kreisler Reveals 'Classics' as Own; Foiled Music Critics for 30 Years.

A musical editor researching the changes made by Kreisler to the 'original' Pugnani score of the Praeludium & Allegro concluded that Pugnani never wrote such a piece. An uproar ensued and Kreisler, with the consent of his publisher, told his side of the story.

In this letter, written a month later, Kreisler was at pains to point out that he did not (on his 60th birthday) personally release the story, presumably to counter an accusation from Mr Evans that he had used it as a form of self publicity.
