Marta Clare, née Gardon, grew up in Budapest where she studied music. She noted: 'Mercifully I survived the Nazis, but the following regime was hardly an improvement. So many people wanted to leave that the government closed the frontiers in order to keep them in!' As a concert pianist, she was given special permission to travel abroad to participate in an international competition; she defected to the West, ending up in Australia. There she met and eventually married violinist Maurice Clare. Together they went on to tour the world as a violin-piano duo.

Born in Scotland in 1914, Maurice Clare won the first Caird Scholarship to study violin with Sevcik, Flesch and Enesco. He went on to lead the London Philharmonic under Sir Thomas Beecham and performed widely in the Far East, New Zealand and Australia. Clare was a respected pedagogue, ending his career at the Royal Northern College of Music in 1980.
