Willy Hess (1859-1939) was a pupil of Joseph Joachim who led various orchestras, including Frankfurt Opera, the Hallé Orchestra and the Boston Symphony. He was appointed principal professor of violin at the Royal Manchester College (now the Royal Northern) on its opening in 1893.
