Giovanni Gagliano I

Giovanni Gagliano was the son of Nicola, and was active in Naples from around 1785 to 1819. He is associated with his brothers Giuseppe and Ferdinando, but seems to have worked alone later in his career, using a slightly inferior varnish laid over a dark ground. Some decorated instruments in the style of Stradivari are attributed to him but generally his work is slightly erratic but within the Gagliano tradition. His son Giovanni (II) (1800-1867) worked briefly with his brothers Raffaele and Antonio, but left little identifiable work of his own.
