A viola

Austria, circa 1760

This viola displays many of the characteristics of the Austrian makers of the mid-18th century, particularly those working in the Salzburg region. Its Stainer-esque f-holes, the rich, red varnish and the delicate final turn of the scroll are all typical of this school. The varnish is beautifully preserved, and the archings and square shoulders suggest that the instrument has been reduced in length. The viola has an impressive sound, is very responsive and has a rich range of overtones.
