A violin by Antonio Gragnani

Livorno, 1776

Despite studying his craft in Florence, Antonio Gragnani set up his own business in Livorno and developed his own personal style, not so much influenced by his time in Florence but rather loosely based on Stradivari models, with a distinctively shaped elongated scroll. This violin is a very representative example of the maker’s output, with a beautiful and piercing tone which is colourful and carries well in all registers.
