A violin by Claude Pierray

Paris, 1714

This violin is a characteristic example of the work of Pierray, who is regarded as the leading maker of the 18th century Paris school. The violin is modelled after Nicolo Amati and its dry, dark golden brown varnish is typical of this maker. It still bears its original manuscript label dated 1714.
