A contemporary of Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri filius Andreæ is considered one of the finest Cremonese makers of his time. Famous for his beautiful varnish, his career spanned the years 1690-1730, during which time the Casa Guarneri had a consistent output of excellent sounding instruments. In his later years he was often assisted by his son Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù. This violin dates from 1710 when the maker was at the height of his powers, and his experience is certainly reflected in the violin’s sound which is rich, colourful and focused.
