A violin by Johannes Theodorus Cuypers

The Hague, 1807

This violin is in a fantastic state of preservation, bearing its original label. The phrase ‘aetis suae 83’ on the label means literally ‘consecrated in years 83’, indicating that Cuypers was 83 when this instrument was finished. This is reminiscent of Stradivari´s habit of labelling his later instruments ‘d’Anni…’ followed by his age.

The instrument has a very earthy quality to its tone. It is focused and rich in all registers and can handle bow pressure with ease.
