A violin by Matteo Goffriller

Venice, circa 1700

A student of Matthias Albani of Bolzano, Matteo Goffriller set up his workshop in Venice. His arrival in the lagoon city can be considered the founding moment of the Venetian School. The typical red varnish of Goffriller’s instruments became a trademark and was copied by most of his contemporaries in the Veneto. This instrument is in a truly spectacular state of preservation and is covered in rich red varnish. Tonally it meets all expectations - it has a strong core with a colourful range of overtones and an open bass register.
