Rina Cavallari was born in Ferrara in 1914 and studied the violin and opera in Milan and Genoa. She became one of the foremost Italian mezzo-sopranos of her generation and performed regularly at La Scala, Milan, and other major European opera houses. She made a number of recordings with Maria Callas in the 1950s, including the two famous 1954 recordings of Bellini's Norma and Verdi's La Forza del Destino.
