A cello by Bernhard Simon Fendt I

London, circa 1800

The delicate features of this cello are evidence of the masterful skills of this maker who was renowned for his detailed replicas of old Italian masters. From 1798 onwards he joined the workshop of Thomas Dodd, working with John Frederick Lott. During this period Fendt developed his signature rich and warm varnish which is plentiful and well preserved on this example. The instrument is an impressive Amati copy and its sound is very responsive, with a focused and strong core and a rich range of overtones.
