A violin by Giovanni Battista Grancino II

Milan, circa 1720

The son of Giovanni Grancino I, Giovanni Battista was born in Milan in 1673. He worked in his father’s workshop until 1708 when he was found guilty of the murder of fellow violin maker Antonio Maria Lavazza. As a result he had to leave Milan but continued making instruments, such as this example from circa 1720. It is a very typical and recognisable instrument by this maker whose work incorporates many elements of his father’s style, making them difficult to differentiate. This instrument has a clear sound and a very easy temperament with a quick and easy response.
