Growing up in Australia in the 1940s and 50s, Dorothy Fellows discovered there there were very few opportunities for developing and presenting her rare musical talent. She took the decision to move to the UK to study and perform, and she and her husband Clive emigrated to London in the late 1950's, where Dorothy completed her advanced studies in music. She was made a Fellow of the Trinity College of Music London, in Harpsichord and Pianoforte, in the early 60s.

Already a qualified teacher in Australia, Dorothy further pursued her teaching career. The UK became her permanent home and the cello her favoured instrument. Dorothy was a passionate collector of instruments and bows, many of which she commissioned from contemporary makers in the 1970s and 80s. By the time of her death in 2013 she had acquired a substantial collection of close to 100 instruments and bows.
