Provenance
Émile Mendels (1889-1987) was a child prodigy who went on to have a celebrated career as an international performer and as concertmaster of the Orchestre de Paris. He was closely connected with the musical elite of his time. Saint-Saëns was a family friend, and in 1918 he wrote Mendels a cadenza for Mozart's 5th violin concerto.
