Notable Sales: Matthias Albani II
Born in 1634 to Matthias Albani I (c1621-1673), Matthias II is presumed to have been a pupil of his father, as well as of Martino Arz in Rome. He developed his own Italianate style using the Amati model, quite unlike his father’s work with the Stainer model, and worked extensively with his two sons, Michael and Joseph. His dark varnish, applied in the Venetian style, is of excellent quality and his instruments are very cleanly finished, although his name is plagued by inferior German copies.
