Notable Sales: Charles Nicolas Bazin
Charles Nicolas Bazin was the son and pupil of François Xavier, and was born in 1847. He was the most gifted bow maker in the family, and became the most prolific. He soon broke away from the Peccatte-influenced model of his father and was inspired by the more elegant work of Voirin. In the 1870s he made bows for Joseph Hel, often in the style of Vuillaume’s ‘picture’ bows, with a tiny photo of Hel inside the frog. Around 1880 he established his own brand, C BAZIN, which, by around 1900, had grown to be a highly respected shop employing about 15 bow makers and producing over 2,000 bows a year. He was a key figure in the founding of the Mirecourt School of Violin Making, and he retired gradually from 1907 until his death in 1915.
