Natale Carletti was born in 1904 in Pieve di Cento, Bologna, and died there in 1979. He was the son of Carlo, whom he succeeded in 1941, alongside his brother Nullo (1911-1978). A prolific maker, especially of cellos (he was trained as a cellist at the Bologna Conservatoire), his usual violin model was based on the 1718 ‘San Lorenzo’ Stradivari. He was awarded a gold medal in Cremona in 1949 for a double bass. His varnish varies in tone from golden yellow to strong red, and his workmanship is of a high order.
