A violin by Augusto da Rub, Viterbo

Viterbo, circa 1760

Very few instruments by this maker survive today. This well-preserved example gives us a very good idea of what da Rub was striving for in his work. Coming from a town just north of Rome, his craftsmanship is clearly influenced by the principal Roman makers of the time – Tecchler and Platner. The full arching gives this violin a rich, warm and colourful tone.
