Born in Copenhagen in 1822, Enger was initially trained by Thomas Jacobsen, and subsequently studied in Germany and then in Paris under Vuillaume. He returned to Copenhagen to take over Jacobsen’s business after his death in around 1853. He was briefly assisted by his son Hagbart, until his own death in 1886.
