Lot 66
A violin, circle of Giuseppe & Antonio Gagliano
(fl Naples, c1780-1800)
Naples, early 19th century
Notable Sales: Giuseppe & Antonio Gagliano
Although born into a prolific violin-making family, Antonio Gagliano was not blessed with the talent of his brother Giuseppe. The instruments that the brothers made in collaboration seldom achieve the visual attractiveness and standard of execution of those made by Giuseppe alone. The difference in workmanship can be seen by comparing the scroll on a violin by Giuseppe Gagliano circa 1780 with the scroll on a violin by Giuseppe and Antonio Gagliano, circa 1800.
The violin circa 1805 would appear to be a true collaboration between the two brothers, whereas the circa 1800 violin is dominated by the hand of Giuseppe, and is difficult to distinguish from the circa 1775 Giuseppe.
