Nicola Marchioni

Born in 1662 in Bologna, Marchioni was trained in the priesthood, and adopted the name ‘Dom Nicolò Amati’ when he took up violin making in the early 1700s. His work is very distinctive and characterful, but recognisably in the Bolognese tradition of the Tononi family, with fine red-brown varnish, and often quite low, closely-set soundholes and long centre bouts, the chamfers of the scroll sometimes blackened like those of Stradivari. He died in 1752.
