A celebrated teacher at the Cremona School of Violin Making, Conia was born in Felsögalla in Hungary in 1946, the son of the Hungarian luthier Istvan Konya, who himself studied at the Cremona school. Stefano came to the school as a student under Sgarabotto, Morassi and Bissolotti, and settled there as a teacher after graduating in 1972. He Italianised his name and became an Italian citizen in 1990. He won many awards for his making, using classical Cremonese models as well as his own.
