Notable Sales: George Withers
George Withers was the son of the founder of the Withers Violin shop in London, Edward Withers (I), and the brother of Edward Withers (II). Born in 1847, he left the family business to start his own shop in 1878. Joined later by his sons, Guarnerius and Walter, the company became George Withers & Sons, producing Stradivari and Guarneri model violins. Bows made for the company by Percy Bryant and Victor Thomassin, are branded ‘G.W. & S.’ or ‘GEORGE WITHERS & SONS’. George retired in 1904 and died in 1931, the shop continuing under Guarnerius and Walter until 1932.
