Robert Lindley (1776-1855) was considered the leading English cellist of his day. He was appointed Professor at the Royal Academy of Music when it was founded in 1822. He owned a number of Forster cellos, and a fine Benjamin Banks.
The cello was subsequently owned by Herbert Trounson. Trounson bought the cello from his teacher, who had bought it from Lindley. In 1951 Constance Tillyard met Trounson and after his death she bought the cello from his widow for £24. She paid in £5 instalments. The cello remained in her possession until her death in 2015.
