Oreste Candi

The elder brother of Cesare Candi, Oreste was born in Minerbo, Bologna, in 1865. They worked together for Raffaele Fiorini, and in 1888 moved to Genoa to work for the Barberis mandolin company. In 1892 they opened their own premises at 54 via dei Servi, primarily making mandolins, but Oreste moved to 7 via B.Bosco, then to 28 vico Dritto di Ponticello, and finally in about 1930 to via Ugo Foscolo. The brothers do not seem to have collaborated in violin making; no violins bear the brothers’ joint label. Oreste devoted much energy to fretted instruments, but his mature style in violin making developed from around 1925, and worked prolifically up until his death in 1938.
