Notable Sales: Giuseppe Cavaleri
Giuseppe Cavaleri remains a somewhat obscure figure among 18th-century Italian violin makers, with little firmly documented about his life. He is known to have worked in Genoa during the 1730s and 1740s, yet appears to have operated independently, without clear ties to prominent local makers or established lineages of the period.
The small number of surviving instruments makes it difficult to define his output with precision, though his work fits broadly within the diverse traditions of Italian luthiery of the time. His approach suggests an awareness of Amati-inspired models, interpreted with a personal and somewhat unconventional hand. Materials were often modest, occasionally including less typical woods, reflecting a practical and regional character shared by some Genoese craftsmen.
Cavaleri’s instruments are visually appealing, marked by relatively flat arching and pronounced fluting at the edges. The soundholes tend to be long, narrow, and set close together, while the scrolls can appear slightly uneven in proportion. His varnish, typically a soft golden-brown, contributes to their charm. Tonally, however, these violins do not always achieve great depth or power.
By contrast, his violas stand out as particularly successful. Built on a well-conceived contralto form, they are regarded as his most accomplished works, combining aesthetic appeal with stronger musical qualities.
