Notable Sales: Alfredo Contino
A significant Neapolitan maker of the twentieth century, Contino was born in 1890 and studied with Vincenzo Postiglione from 1902, succeeding to his business in 1916. A very prolific maker, he achieved a gold medal at Padua in 1932. He is best known now for his imitations of Gagliano work, with a convincing potassium bichromate ground. Some are branded A. Contino Napoli, and have an inscription on the interior of the front, with a personal signifier known as the ‘Jettatura’.
