Notable Sales: Giovanni Dollenz
The definitive maker of the Trieste school, Giovanni Dollenz was born there in 1802 and was a double bass player in the Orchestra of the Gran Teatro Civico in the city until 1853. His violin making career began in about 1830, and may have been influenced by Antoni Pelizon, who was active in the region at around that time, and, stylistically, by instruments made by Lorenzo Storioni when he was resident in Trieste around 1804. His work in general is not finely finished, but well-proportioned and very effective, with a rather thin, hard varnish of pale gold and orange tints. After his death in 1857, he was succeeded by his son Giuseppe (1832-1892), whose work is largely similar in style, if a little inferior in execution and materials.
