Notable Sales: Gaetano Guadagnini II
Gaetano Guadagnini (II) was born in Turin in 1796, the son of Carlo and grandson of Giovanni Battista. He inherited the family workshop in 1817 at the age of 21, and it enjoyed success not seen since the demise of his grandfather. He was associated with Alessandro d’Espine, possibly as his teacher, and certainly varnishing some instruments for the older man. Their styles are so close that in some cases it is almost impossible to distinguish their work. Guadagnini’s instruments are rare and display the classical inspiration and fine execution which became a trademark of the 19th century Turin School.
