Gaspero Piattellini

Gaspero, born in 1763 to Arrigo Piattellini, lived with his brother Luigi in Florence and worked under the tutelage of Giovanni Battista Gabrielli from the ages of 19 to 25. He and Luigi made instruments together in Gabrielli’s workshop until Gaspero married Regina around 1795 and moved out of his brother’s house. He continued making in Florence and trained his son, Gaetano, who took over the business after his father’s death in 1840.

Gaspero’s work follows the Gabrieli style closely, in a blend of Italian and Stainer modelling. The soundholes are quite distinctive, set very wide apart, and the varnish is very fine in the Florentine tradition, being pale and clear golden-brown. Gaspero was listed as a maker of stringed instruments in the Florentine census of 1839, but few instruments dated after 1815 are known to exist.
