Born in Paris in 1954, Benoît Rolland is a bow maker and musician. He began making bows in 1971 and has received various awards, including Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (2017), MacArthur Fellow (2012), Maître Archetier d’Art (1983), and Best Artisan of France (1979). His bows are played in 57 countries and by soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Anne-Sophie Mutter. Rolland has evolved the traditional concepts of French bow making into a modern art form. He created the first carbon fibre concert bow in the 1980s, transformed the classical bow in 2012 by setting the hair at the angle of playing, and redesigned the conducting baton in 2017. Originally from Paris, he now works in Boston.
