A cello by Gasparo Bertolotti ‘da Saló’
Brescia, circa 1600
Born in the town of Saló in 1540, Gasparo Bertolotti settled in Brescia in 1563. He very likely started instrument making shortly after and was prolific throughout his life. This cello was possibly conceived as a viol as the pegbox could accommodate at least 5 pegs. The front was made by Francesco Rugeri, very probably as a repair front, as it matches the outline of the back perfectly. This instrument has a rich sound that breaches the gap between modern playing requirements and the old Brescian sound.
