Ex-Hamma; Hagner
Cremona, circa 1717
labelled Antonius Stradiuarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno 1717 AS
length of back 35.5cm.
The 1717 ‘ex-Hamma; Hagner’, not to be confused with the 1717 ‘ex-Hamma’, has no documented connection to Fridolin Hamma or any of his heirs despite its name. Its first record of ownership is from c1910, when it was bought by Heinrich Kessler, a violin maker and dealer from Markneukirchen, living in Mannheim. Kessler sold the violin to A. Reutter of Stuttgart. In c1950 the violin was bought by Max Kergl, also a resident of Stuttgart, from whom it passed to Marianne Stitz, a violinist known for having been Michael Jelden’s first teacher when he was just 5 years old.
Sotheby’s sold the ‘ex-Hamma; Hagner’ in 2011 to Viviane Hagner, from whom it received its name. Hagner made her concert debut aged 12 and was the soloist for the historic “Joint Concert” between the Berlin and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras just one year later in 1990. The violin remains with her today.
